HOW TO STORE TAHINI

many clients about how to properly store tahini and how long the product lasts (on the shelf or within the fridge), so we decided to share all of this information right here.

tahini

How long does Tahini last unopened?

The shelf-life is 2+ years (fridge or pantry), but please reference the “best by” date if you would like a hard-date.

How long does Tahini last after opening?

Tahini can last for a year after opening.  The only thing that will make tahini “turn” is water – so be mindful to use a clean, completely dry spoon

What happens after owning tahini for longer than its shelf life?

The texture of the tahini and the natural oils that live within the product begin to harden, so the smoothness of the product begins to thicken and stiffen, making it a less desirable product after the “best by” date.

Why can tahini last so long?

Tahini can last so long because its natural oils act as a preservative! Cool, right?

Where should I store my tahini? Fridge or cabinet?

We recommend storing your tahini in a cool and dry area, away from any heat source, ideally in the pantry, cabinet, or on your countertop as long as it’s away from direct sunlight. Like peanut butter, you can store in the pantry or fridge depending on your preferences. If you prefer storing it in the fridge but find you need to use your tahini in an application where a thinner consistency is preferred, simply add a teaspoon of water (to a bowl or glass, not your jar of tahini) and mix.

What happens if the tahini eventually starts to separate?

This is totally normal. By sitting on a shelf without frequently using the product, the natural oils from the pressed sesame seeds start to separate from the paste itself. All you need to do is shake the bottle or stir the product and you are good to go! Keep in mind that if your tahini has separated, it is still safe to consume. Always go by best-by date and smell!

Does tahini go bad, and how do you know if it goes bad?

It is possible for tahini to go bad.  If it does, it will have a noticeable, rancid smell. Rancid tahini will have a sharp smell. Some describe it as a crayon or play dough smell.
